Concept Art - Enemy Design

Image
Seeing as how the main enemies in the game will be fungal infected, we have drawn inspiration from the design of the 'Cordyceps' from The Last of Us and 'The Flood' from the Halo game series. We are focusing on two enemies at the moment, as they will be encountered the most in game and use the simplest mechanics. Concept Art- player weapons; pistol and rifle

Our Lead Artist has created some preliminary designs for the weapon sandbox. Starter pistol: As with most games, the player should start the game feeling somewhat underpowered. The starter pistol will be significantly weaker than other weapons gained later in the game, although it should still easy to use and be effective against the earlier enemy types. Early pistol concept design Battle Rifle: The Battle rifle will have a slower fire rate, a slower travel time, and a lower damage fall off. Despite this it deals significantly more damage than the starting pistol. It is a burst firing gun that can pierce through enemies, capable of dealing damage to multiple targets at once. Like the blaster it will also fire plasma bolts; to avoid confusion, these bolts will be a different colour. Battle Rifle concept designs:

Game Concept- Story

While the gameplay of Luminex will be our main focus during development, we have created a rough idea of the story to frame the gameplay around.  In Luminex the player will take control of a prisoner aboard a dystopian space prison. The protagonist is awoken from stasis to find the vessel decrepit, and all the crew members missing or dead. While navigating throughout the different areas, the player may take notice of a fungal organism growing throughout the ship. From here the player is motivated to escape the ship and to uncover the mystery of what went wrong, while avoiding the many dangerous enemies, obstacles and hazards.  Overall, the story should be kept to the background. The player can decipher what is going on on if they wish, but the gameplay should remain the focus and should provide enough intrinsic motivation to keep the player from losing interest.

Introduction to Game Concept- Gameplay

Hello, this blog is here to document the development process of our game, Luminex . Quantum Horizon Studios is a small team of five BSc Games Development students; We are new to game development and are hoping that this project will expand our understanding of the facets involved in game production. Luminex is a sci-fi platformer shooter, taking inspiration from games such as Hollow Knight and Intrusion 2 respectively. The gameplay of Luminex involves running, jumping and shooting- there are also two key mechanics that separate Luminex from other similar titles on the market, which we will explain later in this post. It will use a side-scrolling perspective i.e. the user sees the character from the side and movement is left/right.  Gameplay in  Intrusion 2 (2012) : The enemies the player fights will be fungus infected crew members, and the automated defences of the prison. The design of the fungus enemies will be similar to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. Enemy design in  T...
